Gas has also been used by murderers and perhaps one of the most famous cases is that of John Reginald Halliday Christie. He met 32-year-old Muriel Eady, who worked in the canteen. She was small and stout and had a steady boy-friend. The two of them used to visit Christie in Rillington Place. One day he persuaded her that he could cure her catarrh. She submitted while he bubbled gas from the mains through Friar's Balsam to a home-made face mask. When she became unconscious he raped and strangled her. He put her body into the garden via the wash-house. He used this method on more than one occasion.
