Maurice Freedman

Freedman was a 36-year-old, married ex-policeman with a gambling problem. He borrowed money extensively and had even pawned his clothes to raise a wager. He became friendly with Annette Friedson, a young typist who worked in the City. Her parents thought him highly undesirable and told her to finish with him. Because it was feared that Freedman might try and make approaches to Annette, her brother used to accompany her to work each day.

On the morning of 26th January 1932 she was escorted to work as usual, but reedman was waiting inside the building and cut her throat with a razor. The bloodstained weapon, which had hairs on it that matched the fur collar that Annette had been wearing, was found on a London bus.

Freedman was arrested and he maintained that he had told Annette that he was going to kill himself if she had finished with him. His story was that, in the ensuing struggle, the girl had pulled the razor across her own throat.

At his Old Bailey trial he was identified by the conductor of the bus on which the razor was found. He was found guilty and executed at Pentonville Prison on 4th May 1932.
